The issue of peace between North and South Korea on the Korean Peninsula is always in the news, and whether this peace process will work or not has a great impact on us in Japan.

Did you know that the United Nations Forces in Korea, which was established during the Korean War in 1950, is still active today? When the Korean War ends and a peace treaty is signed, the UN Forces Korea will be disbanded. However, the U.S., which effectively controls the U.N. forces at present, has said that it will not approve the project to connect the railroads between North and South Korea without the approval of the U.N. forces, thus obstructing the approach between North and South Korea. In 1975, the United Nations passed a resolution calling for the dissolution of the Status of Forces Agreement with the Japanese government.

In 1975, a resolution was passed by the United Nations calling for the dissolution of the UN forces, and the opposition Democratic People's Party of South Korea has launched an international appeal for the dissolution of the UN forces. IADL (International Association of Democratic Lawyers) and COLAP (College of Lawyers for Asia and the Pacific), two legal organizations to which I belong, are also calling for this.
